Unleash Your Potential: David & Goliath

Far West Capital’s Book Club

At Far West Capital, we are always looking for new ways to energize our team and inspire our mission.  So when one of our operations staff had the idea of starting a book club and finding books that connect to our core values, we all jumped on board.

The first pick: David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm Gladwell.

Gladwell opens with the infamous story of, you guessed it, David and Goliath. He recounts the tale of the small shepherd boy (David) who defeats the stronger and seemingly more powerful giant (Goliath) with a single blow. But how?  As the underdog, what is it that allows David to take on this giant?

The book focuses on this idea of the underdog. Gladwell gives many more examples of unlikely heroes – from a prominent business leader, to an influential doctor, to a girl’s middle school basketball team — who all overcome great challenges to achieve even greater accomplishments.

The creativity and passion in these stories really spoke to us, and after reading the book, we’ve discovered that the Far West Capital team is not afraid of being the underdog. In fact, we are all about embracing our inner David – and that’s a good thing.

If you follow our blog, you know we pride ourselves on our unwavering spirit to unleash potential for ourselves and for our clients. It’s exactly this spirit that brings out the David in us and fuels our determination to get things right. No matter the challenge, we strive to maximize results for our clients and to have fun while we’re doing it. We’ve learned that when you approach situations with a self-awareness and force yourself to think creatively about the tasks at hand, you create opportunities that you never knew were possible.

The next time you feel like the underdog, don’t let it get to you. Remember your strengths and teach yourself to use them in new ways.
