MUSA

After reading about an underwater museum in Cancun, I was struck with a wave of déjà vu. There was something very familiar about it, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then I realized that there was something else connecting me to this museum than just fascination. I digress, and must first elaborate on the story of this unique museum…

The project for this underwater art exhibit, called MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte), began in November 2009. The natural reefs in the Cancun Marine Park began to experience resource depletion due to the immense amount of tourists it attracted. This caused three fearless men to step in and so something about it.

But they were up against a daunting task. How would they be able to get the 750,000 visitors that place such great pressure on the resources of Cancun Marine Park to stop visiting, without shutting the park down? Some simple out-of-the-box thinking resulted in the beginning of this amazing museum.

MUSAInstead of making the tourists cease their underwater trips to Cancun Marine Park, they simply re-directed them to something better. MUSA consists of over 450 permanent life-size sculptures, and is one of the largest and most ambitious underwater artificial art attractions in the world. Its aim is to demonstrate the interaction between art and environmental science by forming a complex reef structure that marine life can inhabit and increase biomass on a grand scale. The benefits of MUSA are astonishing, with each structure made from specialized materials used to promote coral life.

MUSAThe three men who founded this project came up with a beautiful way to benefit tourists, wildlife and nature. The location of MUSA promotes the recovery of the natural reefs as it relieves the pressure on them by drawing visitors away. This win-win solution inspires me deeply, proving that there’s always a solution to life’s problems.
